Synopsis

The edited volume “70 Jahre Germanistik in Zadar: Rückblicke, Einblicke, Ausblicke” represents a contribution to the development and visibility of German Studies in Croatia and in the broader international context. Published on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Department of German Studies at the University of Zadar, the volume documents the continuity of its development while also providing insights into current scholarly, didactic-methodological, and social trends shaping contemporary German Studies. It brings together contributions by Croatian and international scholars in the fields of linguistics, literary studies, translation studies, and the methodology and didactics of German language and literature.

The contributions in literary studies address various aspects of contemporary literature, including the motifs of memory and forgetting, migration and identity, as well as literary representations of social, ecological, and existential crises. Particular attention is also paid to the influence of digital media on reading practices, the reception of literary texts, and their interpretation, thereby raising questions about the changing role of literature and new forms of its mediation in the digital age. The contributions in linguistics and translation studies additionally address current issues related to language, language use, and translation in the contemporary social and cultural context.

The didactic-methodological section of the volume presents contemporary approaches to the teaching of German language and literature, with an emphasis on the development of intercultural and digital competences, inclusivity, and the application of innovative teaching methods. Particular attention is devoted to reflecting on the opportunities and challenges posed by new technologies and artificial intelligence in the educational process. This involves examining not only their practical application in teaching but also their role in redefining learning and teaching processes and the development of learners’ and students’ competences.

At the scholarly level, the volume contributes to a better understanding of current changes, developments, and new perspectives within contemporary German Studies by bringing together diverse theoretical, methodological, and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of language, literature, culture, and translation. At the same time, it is also of considerable value in an educational context, as it provides impulses for reflecting on current educational needs and on possibilities for modernizing and innovating the teaching of German language and literature. In this way, the volume connects scholarly research with educational practice and highlights the role of German Studies in responding to the changing demands of contemporary society and education.
