Unknown Artistic Contacts between Ivan Meštrović and Zlatko Šulentić

Abstract

The article examines the complex and previously underexplored artistic contacts between Ivan Meštrović and Zlatko Šulentić, two key figures in Croatian modern art. A central focus is the attribution of a caricature of Meštrović to Šulentić, analysed in comparison with other caricatures of the renowned sculptor. Based on archival materials, the study also uncovers Meštrović’s overlooked contributions to establishing the Yugoslav Room at the University of Pittsburgh. Šulentić’s Portrait of Josip Juraj Strossmayer is discussed alongside its preserved preparatory studies, and Meštrović’s significant sculptural donations – Self-Portrait and Portrait of Mihajlo Pupin – are highlighted. Attention is given to Šulentić’s role in assuming Meštrović’s duties at the Royal Academy of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb between 1941 and 1942, reflecting their collaboration and mutual respect. Additional points of contact include their earlier participation in a joint exhibition with the Group of Independent Artists and Šulentić’s acclaimed portrait Boy, which became part of Meštrović’s collection. The article concludes with a stylistic and morphological analysis of expressionism in their respective oeuvres, using selected examples to deepen our understanding of their significance in Croatian modern art.
