Following the theoretical framework of semiotics of space this paper examines in more detail the semantic opposition between spontaneous and imposed naming of places (Skračić 2011). Use of the Greimasian model of the semiotic square analysis enables to distinguish four basic types of naming: imposed, spontaneous, zonal, and functional. Their characteristics, mutual relations, functions and contexts of use in language are examined and explained further in text.
