The comparison of image evaluation of Croatia and Croats in German newspaper articles in war years in Croatia (1990-1995) and today (2010-2015)

Abstract

This article shows how Croats and their country Croatia are evaluated
in the years of war (1990-1995) and nowadays (2010-2015). The
term evaluation is firmly linked to the term value, i.e. the evaluation
always depends on socially accepted norms (cf. Mikulova 2012: 82).
This article describes the image of Croats and Croatia in Germany
by analysing and comparing how they are evaluated in the COSMAS
II corpus in the newspaper Die Zeit. It will be analysed which words
and expressions occur with the term kroat*. In the analysis, judgement
as an evaluation category will be examined, i.e. how (un)usual, (un)
capable, (un)resolute, (un)truthful and (un)ethical someone is.
