The aiuitbor follows the semantic development of the Serbocroatian loan word surgati (se) and its syntactic behaviour through centuries. While in the epic »Ribanje i ribarsko prigovaranje« toy the Croatian Renaissance poet Petar Hektorović the word surgati, together with the direct object plav, meant »to secure a ship toy anchor«, in the examples from the 19th and 20th century, gathered at numerous places on the Eastern coast anid islands of the Adriatic, the word oan mainly be found without an object and most frequently means »to cast anchor«. From this toaste meaning numerous figurative ones have emerged (such as »to take root in somebody elise’s house as an unwanted guest«, »to creep into bed«, etc.). Much rarer are the meanings like »to take draught«, »to land«, »to turn up (in front of a port)«, etc.
