The elements of the structure of the nominal group in English are the modifier, the head, the qualifier - in that order. The modifier is a stoigle-word attribute, in which each word modifies the head independently of other words in the modifier. Here are also included coordinated words which act as a single unit. The qualifier dis a group attribute, consisting of several words which operate as a whole. Instances of post-positive adjectives which were examined show that order is a category which is different from sequence because some types of post-positive attributes are not qualifiers but modiifiers. The distinction is made on the basis of the formal criteria of lexical meaning and of internal structure of the attribute. Post-positive adjectives which have the same lexical meaning when used in both pre-position and post-position are classed as post-modifiers; those having different lexical meaning in post-position are classed as qualifiers. Post-positive adjectives which are in thedir turn modified by other preattrihitles arc classed as post-modifiers; post-positive adjectives which are modified by other (modifiers and) qualifiers, as well as those which consist of adjectives coordinated with other words, are classed as qualifiers.
