Abstract

Grammatical rank-shift is not a historical process, but the result of a process which can be followed in the creation of compound words, semi-affixes, and affixes proper. A free word thus becomes an element of a free word; word-groups and clauses can be downgraded in this manner. Especial attention is drawn to the status of the non-finite verb forms: they are analyzed as rank-shifted clauses.
