Abstract

The paper deals with the issue of functional stylistic differentiation of standard language. It is well known that the basis of all functional styles is standard language, from which they later branch into spheres of human activities that demand such styles. Functional styles are characterized by a certain number of common features, but also by those that differentiate them from one another. Basic criterion for differentiating those styles is their strict or loose attitude toward the norm on which their characterization is made. The paper also deals with the issues related to grouping certain sub-styles into functional styles of standard language, e.g. language in commercials or SMS messages.
