Abstract

In this paper, the author analyses maritime iconography of the St Nicholas church in Stari Grad on the island of Hvar. Through a number of segments, one can follow factors that enable defining the church as the maritime one. Firstly, titular of the church is the patron of mariners, then, the church is a see of the mariners’ and maritime confraternity of St Nicholas and Holy Cross, and, finally, several votive images depicting ships in maritime perils emphasises the specificity of this sacral and maritime object.
