Abstract

The Croatian nobleman Ivaniš Nelipić found himself in between the Venetians and tlie Bosnian king Tvrtko Tvrtković the second in around 1420. His strong position and independent activity disturbed the normal trade and other relations that existed between the Venetian Republic and the Bosnians. Both sides wished to participate in the elimination of this distinguished Croatian nobleman. The Venatians wanted to destroy him in order to reach Trogir and Split and then eventually Omiš, Klis and Poljica. Firt negotiations for the destruction of the duke Nelipić started at the beginning of 1421. and the negotiations lasted up to 1424. with small periods in between and with temporary peace between Ivaniš with the Venetians. The Veneatins tried to involve vojvoda Sandaij in the negotiations and they partly succeeded in it Tvrtko the Second withdrew from the agreement after Venice betrayed his expectations in helping him against the Turks who twice attacked Bosnia during 1423. and 1424. These events, among other things, made Ivaniš Nelipić together with other most distinguished Croatian families, Frankopans and Kurjakovics, the real shield for the rest of the Croatian territory iim the costal area of Primorje.
