Abstract

The author gives a concise scientific analysis of the results of the investigations on the site “Crkvina” in the village of Galovac near Zadar conducted during the fourth year of the investigation in 1990. New architectural remains were discovered within the complex of an Old Christian church and basic remains from the Early Christian times within the area of about 6oo m2 . Together with this new architectonic remains of Old Christian sacral architecture this year, as during the previous investigations, a number of stone parts from Greak, Old Christian and Early Christian times were discovered. These are mostly parts of an Old Christian and Preromanesque church stone furniture or the decorative architectural parts. Among these finds of special importance for their historical and cultural as well as artistic values are the rare findings of seven Preromanesque capitals of the columns, ciboria, and Presbiterian fence (septumà) from the 9th century. Together with the architectural remains, stone parts and sculptures, 163 tombs were investigated and dated from the 10th to the 16th century. Only in one fourth of the tombs objects were found and that was mainly jewelry, decorative objects, and medieval coins. Investigated tombs were part of a big cemetery of more than hundred tombs (315 discovered so far) wich were in use from the 6th to the 16th century. The results of the investigations in 1990. “Crikvina” in Galovac gave numberous original finds which lead to new scientific discoveries and point to a great archeological and historical value of this site. On the basis of the previous investigations we can rightly place the site “Crkvina” in Galovac among the most important archeological finds so far discovered in the northern Dalmatia, in the middle area of the previously existing Dalmatian Croatia. Thus the investigations on this site should be continued for the benefit of the Croatian archeology.
