Abstract

The author present the results of the investigation conducted at the site of Crkvina in the village of Galovac near Zadar. This is the third investigation conducted in 1989. During this time new archeological remains of a complex Christian basilica were discovered as well as the remains of an unknown Roman architecture which present a new element in the archeological findings in this locality. Apart from this architecture a great number of movable stone monuments were found from the Roman, late Christian and early medieval periods. Most of the stone findings belong to the old Christian and pre-Romanesque church furniture so they are important for the investigation of Ute sacral complex of the basilica on Crkvina. Together with the architectural remains and tile findings of movable stone monuments, 81 tombs (156 all together) were found on this locality in 1989. There was a lot of jewelry and coins with this, too. A few of the discovered tombs belong to the old Christian period, a smaller number to the Dalmatian-Croatian culture (9th to 11th century) while the most numerous are the tombs from the 12th to the 16th century. Thus the results of this investigation give us new scientific insights for the illumination of the archeological and historical problems of the locality Crkvina where there is continuity from the Roman times to the 18th century. The significance of this locality points to the fact that the investigations should be continued since it is very likely that more archeological findings will be discovered which is significant for the locality itself as well as for the complex archeological investigation in the area of the northerm Dalmatia.
