Abstract

With the proclamation of the constitutional rights in Hapsburg monarchy and with this in Dalmatia in 1848, the political lile was activated again. This fact was most evident on the pages of the newspaper Zora dalmatinska. Namely, a number of patriots, Ante Kuzmanić, Stipan Ivičević, Matija Ban, Špiro Popović and some others wrote about the new freedom, the use of the Croatian language in schools and in public places, freedom of the press and cooperation. They supported the idea of uniting Dalmatia with Croatia and Slavonia within Austria since that was the only possibility at the time. Some went even further for the unity of all the south Slavs who were under the rule of Austria and the Turks thus advocating the union of the Slavs. On the other hand, they were against those forces who pushed for the autonomy of Dalmatia or for its joining the renewed Venetian republic.
