Abstract

Drvenik Veli is the most North-Western island in the Central Dalmatian Islands Group and the last secure anchorage and sheltered port on the route towards the North-West and in the navigation along the least sheltered part of the shore of the Adriatic. In the past, but also in the more recent times of insecure sailing boats, this port had a special significance. The intensive olive growing and the favourable market conditions for wine in the loss second half of the 19 th century had slowed down the loss of importance of Drvenik, but, nevertheless, after its position became devalued, it remained isolated away from the main routes. The present evaluation of the advantage of its geographical position and of its natural resources had been attempted with the aim of incorporating this small but interesting island into the current economic streams and of stopping its depopulation.
