In the second half of the 19th century there can be traced great architectural activity in Zadar, it can be seen at the peninsula w ith the outgrow th of the new city, and on the m ainland. It is the period of neostylistic architecture as seen in the rest of Europe. In this city we encounter primarily academic neo-classicism and neo-Renaissance much more rarely neo Gothic and neo-Romanesque tendencies. Therefore specially valuable are neo-Gothic restaurations of the St. Frances monastery and the church of St. Michael which represent the beginning of neostylistic arhitecture in Zadar (1859. and 1869.).
