The results of the fifth and final excavation on the locality crkvina in the village of Galovac near Zadar

The author presents a condensed review of the results of investigations at the locality Crkvina in the village of Galovac, achieved in the fifth, final campaign in 1991. The paper is accompanied with selective technical, photographic documentation of Held work and archeological finds. The excarvntion in 1991. Studied the edges of the locality on the northern and southern sides, revealing numerous tombs and remains of stone walls surrounding the sacral complex. The foundations of a building, 12 by 12 metres, intended for habitation, were discovered at the south-east edge of the site, on the outside of the perimeter wall of the enclosure. Together with the remains of architecture, a profusion of archeological material was found in the excavated layers. The author describes it concisely and selectively. Attentionis paid to the finds on stone plastic and sculpture - from antiquity, from the early Christian period, and early Middle Ages. Clasical architecture and sepulchral monuments are represented with very few fragments. Some ten fragments of a plutcus, three fragments of column capitals and several fragments of small pillars and stone window bars were found from the early Christian period. Finds of pre-Romanesque stone plastic arc the most nutneros; among them especial attention deserve parts of a ciboriunt which, together with the fragments found on earliter occasions, allow its exact reconstruction. Together with the architectural findings, stone plastic and sculpture, a great number of small archeological objects were found in the excarvated layers: pottery and glass shards, various utility objects and coins. In addition, two hundred and eight tombs ware examined, dated from roughly from the 9th to the 16th c. Archeological excavations in 1991. completed the investigations of the locality Crkvina in the village of Galovac. They yielded an abundance of archeological material and new insights for anintegral evaluation of the locality. After five years of systematic investigation, Crkvina in Galovac can be placed among the most significant complex archeological sites so far investigagated in North Dalmatia, which is a significant contribution to Croatian archeology.References
