Abstract

The problem of establishing the place of the cathedrals in Croatian and Knin bishopry is present to our national medieval historiography from a long time ago. The dilemmas about the precise position are enhanced by the fact that the data about their names are also unreliable. New sources however show today that we can establish with certainty that Knin cathedral was built during the 13th century and dedicated to St. Bartolomey the Apostle in 1272. to 1274. It was built in the same place where the royal monastery stood before that, on the Kapitul in Knin. The Information of Split chronicle writer in thel3th century about. St. Mary’s cathedral really refer to the Cathedral of Croatian bishop and this one was erected on Petrovo polje in the village of Kosovo (today the Bishopry near Knin in Kosovo polje) established to the middle of the 11th century. Special attention has been given to the apelaitive i.e. to the topomyn campus discussed toy Toma from Split especially because it causes special obstacje to the definition of the precise position of both, chatedrals. The analysis shows that Tama’s topomyn campus indicates the notion which to late Middle Ages was (known as Campus santi Petri or Campus magnum and it refers to today’s Knin, Kosovo and Petrovo polje together.
