Abstract

Little attention has been devoted to the Gazzetta di Zara, an official published in Zadar from 1832—1850, during the second period of Austrian rule. The Gazzetta feuilleton carried interesting articles on literature, the arts, history of culture, etc. The present author studied the supplements on the arts, or »Belle arti«, most of which were devoted to Zadar’s central figure in painting at the time, namely Francesco Salghetti-Drioli. The main interest of the supplements derives from the descriptions of paintings which are now lost. The dates when the paintings were completed are also significant in some cases: From these articles it is evident that »Christ's Offering to St. Catherine« was painted in 1846, and that the »St. Michael« painted for the church at Risan was done in 1846, and not in 1849 as it is dated.
Other articles from the Gazzetta feuilleton are also considered briefly.
