Abstract

The present article holds that Virginia Woolf's novel The Waves evinces a scepticism in regard to the possibility of art to represent reality which is Incompatible with her earlier modernist poetic (as illustrated by the example of To the Lighthouse). This self-appraisal of artistic production will culminate in her posthumously published work Between the Acts. Certain possible explanations of these changes are briefly hinted upon.
