Sažetak

Although there is an abundance of grammars of the languages compared here, German (D) and Serbo-Croatian (SK), the question of what should the grammar of German for beginners in the study of German as a foreign language (’DaF)’ be like is to be asked again. Generally speaking, such a grammar ought to be simple, written in language that is accessible to the beginning student, not encumbered with numerous exceptions. Although in this field (‘DaF’) there is a contrastive grammar produced recently, i. e. Kontrastive Grammatik Deutsch-Serbokroatisch by Pavica Mrazović and Urlich Engel (Novi Sad, 198G), one of the essential aims in teaching German as a foreign language — to create a practical and easy-to-eonsult handbook for beginners — has not been achieved. The present article compares the most important class of word in both languages — the verb — on the one hand, and points in most general terms the way in which a handbook of contrastive grammar ought to be conceived on the other.
