Some aspects of social or urban dialectology

Abstract

The article deals with the aims and methods of social or urban dialectology as it Is theoretically approached by the American and British sociolinguists. Our dialectology has mainly neglected the achievements and present research In social dialectology. This neglect, is quite evident in the case of the čakavian dialect. Since social or urban dialectology finds its most attractive field of investigation in big cities the author points to some of the examples from the urban language in the city of Split. She also stresses the fact that some processes could be described and explained much better if they were approached and investigated from the point of view of social dialectology.
