Abstract

The paper describes the contributions of Stjepan Ivšić to the standardization of language which he published in Hrvatski jezik (The Croatian Language), the magazine which he edited in Zagreb in 1938—89. His contributions were varied and he was a prolific writer. The present paper places special emhasis on his article on etymology and phonetics In our orthography. His contributions to the magazine and his whole work brought him the deserved reputation of a fearless and consistent participant in the history of standard Neo-Štokavian. About twenty contributors published in Hrvatski jezik beside Ivšić, among them noted Croatian philologists Barać, Deanović, Guberina, Hamm, Kombol, and Matić. Of especial significance is that as a continuation of Hrvatski jezik the magazine Jezik (Language) was founded in 1952 and it played a crucial part in Croatian philology with its approach to the problems of linguistic culture.
