Female characters in the novel »Gruppenbild mit Dame« by Henrich Böll

Abstract

Following his »aesthetics of the humane« as set forth in his essay Frank- furter Vorlesungen (1964) and his other theoretical works, the female characters in the novel Gruppenbild mit Dame are given by the author, Heinrich Böll, the characteristics he thinks make life worth living. Through the themes of love, dwelling, neighbourhood, fatherland, food, money and religion present in the life-choices of his female characters Heinrich Böll expresses also his convictions of the man and writer, first of all by selecting for his protagoniste simple, modest women — a small man. In the society dominated by the armed forces, church, family and temporary prosperity Böll female characters try to keep a distance from conformism, opposing to it the importance of human values. Through an elaborate scale of motives, in which the central place are given to those of bread, hand, eye, blushing, garbage and of biblical-religious ones, Böll’s female characters have positive characteristics and believe that the basic values determining human life will win, building his aesthetics of the humane — the aesthetics of bread. 43 Heinrich Bö11/Christian Linder, »Drei Tage im März«, Band 10, str. 416—417: »Emotional zu sein gilt ja fast schon als Kranksein, und wenn Sie mal analysieren, in welchen Zusammenhängen den Menschen Emotionalität vorgeworfen wird, dann kommen Sie auf die wahnsinnigsten Dinge (...)
