Abstract

The narrative prose of Ljudevit Vukotinović reveals some correspondence with his earlier epic poems and ballades. In the initial sentence of his prose composition Ivan Vojković Vukotinović follows the model of the beginning of Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe, by adapting it successfully to the shorter narrative form. His initial sentence links, namely, hisortcal events with the present moment, and turns description into action. According to the interplay of epic, lyrical and dramatic elements in the composition Ivan Vojković might be con- sideres as the first attempt to introduce the short story, and one of the earliest reflections of Romanticism in Croatian literature.
