Abstract

Analyzing the syntax of the first sentence in chapters »Mosque« and »Caves« the author points out its importance for the structure of the novel — and eventually its meaning. Parallels with certain musical forms have been studied and the relevance of such comparison stressed-primarily for discovering the structure of the novel A Passage to India. Forster’s unpublished drama The Heart of Bosnia has been described as a sort of preparation for his masterpiece, since it is preoccupied with the problem of the relations between the English and the inhabitants of »less civilized« areas. Comparing the two works, therefore, the development of Forster’s attituted can be followed. The play itself is considered rather »undramatic« — a supposed reason for its not having been staged so far.
