Abstract

Agostino Brambilla is ome of those persons from Italian Austrian pro- vinces who, in the first part of the last century, actively joined the social and cultural life in Dalmatia apart from a regular job which he had. Brambilla worked in Zadar high school but he also joined two important public institutions, the first Dalmatian newspapers during the Austrian rule, the Gazzetta di Zara and Zadar theatre. As the first editor of this newspapers along with the romantic and revolutionary ideology and background poetics which he learned in Lombardia he contributed to the modern tone in the Gazzetta di Zara. With his romantic sensibility he supported »home« articles and domestic problems from promotion of literature to the interests in agri- culture. The author himself contributed important articles. As a theatre person his influence and scope was modest. He would compose songs in honour to the Habsburg Monarchy. He was »poeta cesareo« in Zadar theatre. Although a foreigner in his compositions he accepted elements of »Dalmatian« patriotism and he used similar symbols in his songs and poems like the natives. He distinguished himself as a good teacher, studied contemporary literature, especially romantic literature. His necrologist said that he worked on a long study on the basis of Vico’s teachings. Because of all of this he should not be forgotten since his activity definitely contributed to the global enlightment in Dalmatia of that period.
