Two Kasandrić’s Italian recast of »Hasanaginica«

Abstract

The editor of the very successful anthology Hasanaginica (Svjetlost, 1975) has included in his anthology Arturo Cronia’s recast of this very well known popular ballad having Arturo Cronia in mind as the Italian representative. This choice has been made owing to the fact that Arturo Cronia is a famous and world known, Italian Slavic philologist. Having made the comparative linguistic and metrical analysis of Cronia’s and two Kasandrić’s Italian recast with occasional reference to Fortis’ recast, the author of the article concludes that Cronia’s recast has some linguistic priorities. When metrically analysed Cronia’s recast appears to be quite a failure, the two Kasandrić’s recasts, especially the second one reproduce more or less the style and the rythm of the original and bring the Italian reader closer to the spirit of Hasanaginica, that s, to the psychology of its heroes and to the historical moments of the naition they have stemmed from, and its way of expressing turns the recast into poetic verse. With due respect to the great Italian Slavic philologist the author maintains that Kasandrić’s recast of the ballad thanks to the formerly mentioned characteristics is the one which could represent the Italian recasts much better and fuller than Cronia’s, thus giving the right scope and value to this world-famous ballad and the namesake anthology.
