Abstract

Art examination of the forms of the future in Early Modern High German has shown that the analytical forms of the future: miissen/sollen/wollen + in- finitive were mainly replaced in the 16th century with the construction werden + infinitive. The paper expounds how the contemporary grammarians treated of the analytical forms of the future in their work. The shift from one analytical form (modal verb + infinitive) to the other (werden + infinitive) was duly noted by the grammarians of the Early Modern High German period and described in the proper manner.
