Abstract

The author argues that Faulkner characteristically connects a capacity for emotion with inarticulateness of his inarticulate figures while the verbosity of his articulate characters relate to his observations about the rigid forms of speach and behavior of Southern society, and the Southern dependence on tradition and romantic legends as forms of human behavior. Some parallels have been drawn with Hemingway in this respect and pointed out the similarities and / or differences between the two authors.
