Abstract

Assuming that an analysis of two works based on the same source can show interesting correlations, Držić's comedy Skup and Jonson's comedy The Case is Altered are juxtaposed. Although in the structural respect Držić's comedy is closer to Plautus' comedy Aulularia than is the case with Jonson's comedy, Držić's dramatic technique succeeded in creating a great work of the Renaissance comedy, with a new spirit and views of the world, whereas the dramatic technique and satirical spirit of Ben Jonson resulted in a work which stands aside from the dominant trend in the Renaissance comedy writing, both in England and abroad, and consequently produces a different atmosphere and aesthetic experience in the recipients.
