The picture has become a constant companion of our modern life and our way of thinking. It poses itself in the simplest way, on the principle of constant repetition with wich we are becoming unaware participants of modern achievements in science, technique and art.
The youngest children through pictures and picture-books, enter the reality in which they live, which surrounds them. Because of the young man’s first steps into the world, the main task of the picture-book is to provide complete aiswers and complete experience of the real and imaginative world, and it should also develop speech possibilities and the sense of beauty. Without those values our life would be empty and monotonous. It must help the child to discover human and artistic values which will enrich his life.
A picture-book shows the child relationships in hnis vicinity, it develops his ability of noticing, and it also enriches his vocabulary. It brings him into a world of tehnical achievements, inspires his emotions, starts to arouse his interest in books.
With the synthesis of verbal and visual components, a picture-book teaches and educates and it becomes mediator which helps the child to step iito the world, or to prepare him for school.
The picture-books in the last decade have developed in number and in quality, although it is not known to us whether the thematic variety answers all the interesting questions of our modern child.
