Abstract

On a sample of 141 teachers from the municipality of Zadar, the author aimed to investigate the prevalent forms of continuing education in practice, the forms and methods of improvement they prefer and the differences that might show among the teachers in this matter. The finding showed that self - instruction prevails when it comes to teacher's continuing education. Although teachers highly esteem both seminars and symposiums, these being the most frequent forms of continuing education, they are not satisfied with their quality. Seminars are dominated by traditional forms of presentation, where in the attendant is reduced to the position of a passive recipient in an ex cathedra teaching situation. These occassions are dominated by the frontal approach and by lectures while what appeals to the lechers are group and combined forms of work, accompained by practical chores, demonstration and conversation. Teachers represent a relatively homogeneous group of examinees. No significant differences in their preferences for forms of continuing education are evident in respect to workplace or work experience which gives the results an indubitable significance and makes the possibility of application easier and more effective.
