Abstract

The author wishes to contribute to the rehabilitation of the mirror aspect in the esthetic theory. Owing to its characteristics such as: the ability to create a scene, to reflect reality and turn it into picture, then having in mind the illusory character of its picture, mirror always stood for metaphorical expression of artistic creation. Special theories always tend to separate either its illusory, or its realistic component thus destroying its essential paradoxality. This further on very often invokes attacks on the mirror aspect where mirror turns into an anti-example of art. Having started with the use of the mirror and its meaning in everyday usage the author shows that mirror can serve as a multilevel analogon of art functioning with multifold meanings in the game it plays with us, and most of all having in mind the role it has in the process of self-recognition.
