Abstract
Higher education is the least researched segment of the entire school system. For this reason, very frequently one encounters mistaken assumptions and explanations. The article presents the statistical data pertaining to higher education in Croatia and compares it with the data of a number of other countries. The statistics are quantative such as the movement of the student population, the differentitaion between the input and the output and the efficacy of higher education. According to the the collected data, higher education is going through a period of crisis which demands that changes be inplemented.
