Abstract

The English and American drama was represented in the repertoire of the theatre in Zadar between 1946 and 1962 better than any other foreign drama. The performances included the plays by both earlier and modern English playwrights. Among the first Shakespeare’s plays were the most numerous, whereas among the modern ones G. B. Shaw and J. B. Priestley take the leading part. Many 20th century American dramas were also performed in the theatre in Zadar, the plays by Eugene O’Neill and Tennessee Williams being the best represented. By way of conclusion the author points out that the theatre in Zadar had an important cultural mission in showing to its audience both the earlier English plays and the new trends in the development of the English and American drama in the 20th century.
