SPONDE – Časopis za jezike, književnosti i kulture između dviju obala Jadrana / Rivista di lingue, letterature e culture tra le due sponde dell’Adriatico / A Journal of Languages, Literatures and Cultures between the two Adriatic coasts
General Guidelines
a. The call for papers is open throughout the year. Sponde is published biannually. The Editorial Board accepts original scientific papers, review papers, and professional papers, and subjects all submissions to a double-blind peer-review process. The final decision regarding paper categorization rests with the Editorial Board.
b. Only unpublished papers that have not been simultaneously submitted to any other publication will be considered. The Editorial Board of Sponde does not charge authors any fees for manuscript submission, processing, or publication.
c. Sponde journal adheres to high ethical standards in publishing and expects authors, reviewers, and editors to act responsibly and professionally at all stages of the editorial and review process. By submitting a manuscript, authors confirm that the work is original and that all principles of academic integrity and copyright have been respected. In cases of suspected plagiarism, inappropriate authorship, or other forms of unethical behaviour, the Editorial Board reserves the right to reject the manuscript, request additional clarification, or, if the paper has already been published, issue a correction, retract the work, or take other appropriate editorial measures. Authors are required to declare any potential conflicts of interest that could influence the research results or data interpretation. Reviewers and editors are likewise obliged to recuse themselves from the process should a conflict of interest arise.
d. Papers published in Sponde are available in open access. Authors retain the copyright to their work and grant the journal the right of first publication. The content of the journal is used in accordance with the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License, which permits the use, sharing, and reproduction of the work, provided that the original author and the source of publication are properly credited.
e. Authors are encouraged to use artificial intelligence tools transparently and responsibly, following the guidelines established in accordance with the University of Zadar’s Policy on the Use of Artificial Intelligence and the European Association of Science Editors (EASE) Recommendations on the Use of AI in Scholarly Communication.
1. Technical Formatting Guidelines
Language. Papers are primarily published in Croatian, Italian, and English, and exceptionally in other languages (subject to editorial approval).
Format. Manuscripts must be submitted exclusively in electronic form as an MS Word document (.doc or .docx) to the official email address: sponde@unizd.hr. If the text contains special characters (e.g., Greek alphabet, Cyrillic, etc.), authors are required to submit an identical PDF version of the manuscript alongside the Word document.
The maximum length of the text is 4,800 words or 30,000 characters including spaces and footnotes (approx. 16 standard pages of text). The Editorial Board reserves the right to accept longer texts if required by the nature of the topic.
Manuscripts should be written in Times New Roman font, size 12, with 1.5 line spacing.
The heading should include: First and last name, email address, telephone number, and the institutional affiliation.
Abstract and Keywords. The title should be followed by an abstract of up to 150 words and a maximum of 5 keywords written in the same language as the paper.
If the main body of the text contains multiple sections, it is recommended that the subheadings are numbered.
Extended Summary. Submissions must be accompanied by an extended summary of up to 250 words in both Italian and English along with the translated title and keywords. The summary should outline the purpose of the paper, the research methodology, the key arguments, and the conclusion.
2. Citation and Formatting Style
Italics are used for:
- foreign words and dialectal terms that have not entered everyday usage;
- graphemes, words, and phrases under analysis;
- titles of books, journals, newspapers, and book chapters;
- titles of short stories and poems; the first line of untitled poems (when cited in place of a title);
- titles of theatrical plays, films, visual artworks, and musical compositions.
Double quotation marks (" ") are used for:
- direct quotes;
- emphatic, ironic, or figurative expressions.
Single quotation marks (' ') are used to clarify the meaning of foreign words, dialectal expressions, jargon, and similar terms.
Footnotes (font size 10) are to be used exclusively for digressions and supplementary information.
Quotations that do not exceed three lines are integrated into the text within double quotation marks.
Quotations exceeding three lines must be set off from the text block, formatted in font size 11 with single line spacing (1), without quotation marks, and preceded and followed by a blank line.
Single quotation marks are used for quotes within quotes.
Following a quotation, punctuation marks (except for exclamation marks, question marks, and ellipses that form an integral part of the quoted text) are always placed after the closing quotation marks. Any omissions from the quoted text must be indicated by an ellipsis in square brackets [...].
Lines of verse should be run on with the lines and line breaks should be indicated by a forward slash. Any omission of verses at the beginning, middle or end of the poem, must be marked by ellipsis points in square brackets [...].
In prose citations, the first line is indented only if it is indented in the original text.
When quoting a dialogue in a play or screenplay, the names of the characters should be written in small caps.
