About the Journal

Aims and scope

Archaeologia Adriatica is a scientific journal aiming to publish papers in archaeology but also those from other scientific fields related to archaeology (methodology, history, art history, anthropology, ethnology, museology etc.). The articles should contain the results of research of Adriatic area and its limitrophe territories.

The journal has been published by the Department of Archaeology of the University of Zadar since 2007. It is one of the successors of the journal Radovi Filozofskog fakulteta u Zadru. Razdio povijesnih znanosti (ISSN 0352-6712, e-ISSN 2806-8424). From the 5th volume (2011) onwards, all papers are published in Croatian and English (with the possibility of publication in language other than English). In 2020 the journal achieved the highest national rank for scientific serial publications (so called A1 status).

Free open access journal

Archaeologia Adriatica is an open access journal. The content is completely free of charge for readers and authors.

Submission of manuscripts

The journal is published annually. The articles are published online first (i. e. an electronic version of the article is published after review, proofreading and typesetting but in advance of the print edition; e-ISSN 1848-9281; DOI: 10.15291/archeo) and then in print form (ISSN 1846-4807).

The procedure of review and correction approximately take four months and proofreading, translation and typesetting approximately take additional four months.

The role of the editorial board

The role of the Editorial Board of a scientific journal is prescribed in the Code of Ethics for authors, editors and reviewers of publications by the University of Zadar. The Editorial Board of the journal Arhaeologia Adriatica fully complies with the Code mentioned above. Editors are encouraged to do a preliminary assessment of the work, to assess whether the work is suited to the topical journal, to assess the scholarly relevance of the manuscript, and to check the originality of the manuscript using tools to detect similar publications. All manuscripts undergo an initial evaluation by the Editorial Board and may be rejected without further review if they are deemed to not have elements of scientific work, to be outside the scope of the journal, or to lack novelty.

The Editorial Board will also protect the confidentiality of information gathered during research or professional interaction. If they suspect authors or reviewers of dishonesty, or if this is proven to them, editors will act, regardless of whether the work has already been published. The editorial board will adopt appropriate measures in cases of ethical complaints against submitted manuscripts or publications. False, inaccurate, or deceptive statements will be corrected immediately and duly emphasised. These instructions from the editorial board will be clearly listed and explain to authors what is expected of them, including the criteria for authorship and associate status, following the standards which are applied within the scientific field. The editorial board will select two or more persons who have the relevant expert competences to evaluate the manuscript, give them clear instructions on how to conduct the review procedure, and bear the responsibility for its objectivity and timely completion. The editorial board will ensure reviews are fair, unbiased, and completed in a timely manner, and that the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts is preserved during peer review and publication. The editorial board will give clear guidelines to reviewers, stating what is required of them, including mentioning the confidentiality of material sent for review. When accepting the role, reviewers should declare any potential conflict of interest. The editorial board will protect the identity of the reviewers. The revised version is evaluated by the editorial board and/or reviewers, and the Editor-in-Chief makes a decision as soon as possible regarding the final acceptance based on their suggestions. The Editorial Board will require from all authors a signed declaration that confirms they accept authorship and responsibility for their work.

Review process

Manuscripts are double-blind peer reviewed. Reviewers are not paid. Each paper is reviewed by at least two suitable experts who are not part of the journal’s editorial team. In general, the Editorial Bord invites reviewers who are independent of the authors (e. g. not affiliated with the same institution).
