Relationships as a Form of Self-Destruction in Drago Glamuzina’s Poetry

Abstract

The article deals with Drago Glamuzina's poetic work, contained in his book Crni zec. Sabrane i nove pjesme [The Black Rabbit. Collected and New Poems]. The emphasis of the research is on the destruction and self-destruction that characterizes male-female relationships in these books, and these relationships are understood as a form of self-destruction. The article describes the types of relationships into which Glamuzina’s lyrical protagonist/subject enters and analyzes the global metaphors of the text. The relationships between a man and several women are interpreted; some of them are formalized as marriage, some are lovers-adulterous, and some are only casual and one-time. The analysis introduces the significance of writing as an articulation of experience, but also as an escape from experience. It is concluded that the lyrical subject is constantly in a state of duality between the desire for passion and destruction and the desire for calm and balance. Also, it is emphasized that this is a rare case in domestic and even foreign literature, in which a writer so consistently sticks to one, obsessive topic and writes that he cannot get rid of it – both in his life and literature.
