Abstract

The Katančić’s translation of the Holy Script is a vivid illustration of a very goodstandardisation process of the then Croatian language in Ikavian Štokavian, whichalso proved to be largely sufficient for such demanding biblical texts. However, thetranslation also indicates that the grammatical system, based on Ikavian Štokavian, was well-mastered and applied virtually without any exceptions. There are somemore striking deviations on the lexical level, as it was more difficult to acquire thesystem in terms of its lexical aspect, and the system itself was sometimes insufficient,in which case Katančić relied on his vernacular speech.
