Abstract

By addressing the relationship between good and evil on an ontological, philosophical, or theological level, a phenomenon of evil has risen to the level of cultural universality. Out of any temporal, spatial, or social framework, it has received a transformational character, which is the reason why interpretations of its aspects can no longer be based solely on a narrow approach. Taking into account that the phenomenon of evil is manifold, the paper seeks to determine how it is manifested in the novel Črna mati zemla by Kristian Novak. The methodological and theoretical assumptions of the research are based on the works of Eagleton, Svendsen, Bauman, Žižek, and others, whose analysis aims to show that evil is represented through the psychological state of the main character Matija (the appearance of demonic characters), but also through a fictional depiction of tragic events of suicide in Matija’s village. The aim of the paper is to determine how the character destruction is connected with the appearance of evil and its principle.
