About the Journal
Aims and scope
GEM puts the focus of German Studies on the Mediterranean. It covers the whole spectrum of the field from linguistics to literary and cultural studies. The articles in German, English or Croatian (along with English or German translation) will address questions as to how the Mediterranean is represented in German language, literature, and culture from the Middle Ages up until today. This academic journal pursues the goal to become a portal for Euromediterranean German Studies from both the German speaking regions and the Mediterranean.
The journal is funded with the support of the Ministry of Science, Education and Youth and the University of Zadar.
The readership comes mainly from the philological field of German Studies and the subfield of Mediterranean Studies but it also includes ethnologists, anthropologists, historians, and philosophers.
It is published by the Department of German Studies of the University of Zadar once a year in open access as well as in print. Upon authorial self-correction, it publishes “original academic papers”, Croatian izvorni znanstveni radovi, which distribute research results, “research reports“, Croatian pregledni rad, which critically review the state of the art and new trends in research, and “preliminary reports“, Croat. prethodno priopćenje, which inform of preliminary results of continuing research work, whose topicality, however, demands immediate publication. In addition, reviews and discussions of conferences, monographs, and anthologies from the field of Euromeditteranean German Studies will be published upon editorial discretion.

Review process
The review of the contributions is conducted using the double-blind peer-review process. The editors overview the review process. Based on at least two positive reviews, the editors make the final decision on publishing submitted articles or not. If one of two reviews is positive and the other negative, the editors must request a third opinion. The journal is obliged to make reviews avaible to authors in anonymized form. The editors must categorize articles published in the journal, according to the guidelines applicable in the Republic of Croatia, as “original academic paper” (izvorni znanstveni rad), which distributes research results, “research report“ (pregledni rad), which critically reviews the state of the art and new trends in current research, or “preliminary report“ (prethodno priopćenje), which informs of preliminary results of continuing research work, whose topicality, however, demands immediate publication. The editorial and peer review process should take not more than six months as a rule, unless peer reviewers require substantial revisions of the article from the author.
