Abstract

The Bavarian writer, folklorist and lawyer Ludwig Steub (1812- 1888) traveled to Greece twice, the first time as a member of the state administration (1834 - 1836), which was largely brought in from Bavaria, and later again as a tourist with previous travel experience in the country (1884). In the following article – after a brief introduction to the author – his travel routes will be presented based upon the related autobiographical texts ‘My Life’ (1883), ‘Pictures from Greece’ (1841) and ‘Pictures from Greece. Old and New’ (1885). Of particular importance are those passages in which the philhellene Steub, who is nevertheless significantly influenced by his origins in the Kingdom of Bavaria, makes intercultural perceptions or tries to act as a cultural mediator.
