A Film and Its Croatian Subtitles

Abstract

The aim of this contribution was to analyse the Croatian subtitles of the documentary film Nuovo cinema Buie. The film features the events taking place during the unstable period of the Second World War in Buie, a small Istrian bilingual community. The analysis only deals with the Croatian subtitles for the parts of the film in the standard Italian language and the Istrian-Venetian dialect. Following Gottlieb’s (2009) classification, the analysis has revealed the use of the following strategies: expansion, condensation, paraphrase, transposition, reduction, renunciation, and cancellation, whereas the techniques such as imitation, transcription and dislocation have not been discerned.
