Loan translations in sports terminology: basketball

Abstract

Basketball came to Croatia from America and thus the impact of Englishin Croatian basketball terminology is significant; by taking over the game, the terminology was also taken.In order to examine the interaction between Croatian and English the FIBA’s official rules of the game were compared. As expected, a large number of English loan words and loan translations was established.The results of the analysis were classified according to the type of translation and the mode of adaptation.
